Event Details

Mat Makers (both men and women) meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 1:30 PM for devotions, mat-making, laughter, Christian fellowship, and refreshments.  Mat Makers make sleeping mats from plastic grocery bags.  The mats are distributed through Orphan Grain Train, an LCMS relief agency, to those who through disasters or homelessness, find themselves in need of a place to sleep.  They are well received.  If used outdoors, the mats keep the sleeper up off the cold, damp ground.  They are plastic and don’t soak up moisture.  They are easy to roll up and transport.

Each mat keeps about 700 plastic bags out of the landfill!  There are many steps involved in making a mat.  Some mat-makers smooth, fold, and cut the bags.  Others loop the bags into long plastic cording.  Others wind the cord into tight balls.  Finally, other crafts crochet the plastic cording into mats.  Some mat-makers enjoy the craft so much they take bags home with them and continue making mats at home.

We welcome all to join us!  Is this a way to serve your Savior? Stop in and see what it’s all about. The craft is easy to learn.
